Abstract

The article considers the issue of modern challenges and threats related to decarbonization of the Russian economy in the context of economic and energy security of the Russian Federation. Due to the special geostrategic status of the remote and isolated territories of the Far East and the Arctic zone, the issue of ensuring economic and energy security during the decarbonization of such territories’ economy is extremely relevant. The aim of the article is to study the tools of the economy decarbonization in the remote and isolated territories of the Far East and the Arctic. Within the framework of reducing the carbon footprint through the transition of the economy to low-carbon and carbon-free energy resources, in particular reducing the level of greenhouse gases during the generation of heat and electricity, the Russian legislative basis for implementing renewable energy projects has been analyzed. The structure of the sources of electricity generation in the Russian Federation, as well as energy generation facilities in isolated and hard-to-reach territories of the Far East and the Arctic are considered. The main mechanisms of renewable energy support and some shortcomings are noted, including those related to the lack of such mechanisms in isolated and hard-to-reach territories of the macroregion. As a result, there is need to develop a centralized energy infrastructure based on the modernization of existing energy carriers and the promotion of renewable energy projects. In addition, it was noted that the use of hydrogen, nuclear, geothermal energy and other renewable energy sources also has significant potential for their use in isolated and hard-to-reach territories of the Far East and the Arctic zone. In this connection, these directions are relevant for further analysis and scientific research.
