Abstract

The article is devoted to an urgent problem within the framework of international geopolitical discourse — formation of a new global climate agenda and its impact on the mechanisms of global governance. The study proposes to introduce into scientific circulation the concept and category of “eco-geopolitics”, formalized as a new geopolitical concept, as well as the definition of the “green course” policy as a new global megatrend. The goal of the article is to conceptualize eco-geopolitics as a new phenomenon of international political life and a new category of geopolitical discourse. This goal is achieved by solving the following tasks: conceptualizing the concept of “eco-geopolitics” for subsequent correlation with the empirical base within the framework of an interpretive scheme, defining the main directions of the world agenda transformation; assessing the impact of the new megatrend on global governance mechanisms; characterising the prospects of eco-geopolitics as a political practice and as a new geopolitical concept. The study used a systemic and geopolitical approach, comparative and terminological analysis, the results of the study were verified by the method of expert assessments. The author came to the conclusion that environmental and climatic problems have become a new global megatrend, a factor in global competition for resources and geopolitical leadership, where the United States still plays a key role. At the same time, at the level of geopolitical tactics, these problems act as technologies of hybrid confrontation. The eco-geopolitical concept proposed in the article within the framework of implementing the conceptual scheme was successfully correlated with the interpretive scheme, which provided the connection of the proposed new concept with the study empirical basis. Prospects of eco-geopolitics as a new geopolitical concept seem to be quite relevant for the analysis of international political activity. The operational potential of the concepts and categories of “eco-geopolitics” proposed for introduction into scientific circulation can be used to explain the specifics of the world political agenda transformation and qualitative and quantitative changes in the list of global megatrends. The concept of eco-geopolitics as an explanatory strategy may be of particular importance for the current assessment of national and international security.
